.s. -- united nations ambassador susan rice for the benghazi response. here is what the president said. >> as i've said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. >> okay. so it took senator john mccain about an hour to make it to the s senate floor to offer a response. >> that statement is really remarkable in that if the president thinks that we are picking on people, he really does not have any idea of how serious this issue is. >> seems like the testosterone-fueled rhetoric over benghazi is sort of getting out of control. former cia operative bob behr joins us this morning. good morning, bob. >> good morning. >> i want to make it clear to our viewers what lawmakers want to figure out. there are three separate hearings about to take place today. this is what they're trying to figure out. one, why didn't the united states increase security in libya? two, did the obama administration
the list of those that might be nominated would be s s susan rice. she's been speaking for the first time in response to so much criticism that she has received on how she handled that attack in benghazi, libya. what more can you tell us about what she is saying and how that is resonating, jill? >> i wouldn't say, fredricka, that she really, you know, broke new ground or changed what this administration has been saying, but obama rice did say herself that with a lot of criticism coming from republicans and specifically john mccain has made some comments about her essentially saying that and that she do a maya culpa and retract what she has said or at least set it right. this controversy isn't going away, but let's listen to what ambassador rice did say. i made clear that it was preliminary, and that our investigation would give us the definitive answers. everyone, particularly the intelligence community, has worked in good faith to provide the best assessment based on the information available. >> it doesn't appear that this will go away. that probably won't end it. as we know, there have

to the job. susan rice is another person who has been mentioned who has less kind of gravitas on capitol hill, compared to john kerry. my guess is president obama will try to find someone relatively comparable who can shine in the media, who can do well with members of capitol hill as they deal with the challenges abroad. >> the democrats kept control of the senate, wolf. it is slightly easier when he's talking about confirmees. but the benghazi dustup put a tarnish on susan rice. does that have a bomb ofpotenti more bruising confirmation fight? >> the television appearance, five sunday talk shows in which she said what she said and given how angry the republicans are on this whole benghazi thing, the accusations they're making and they're going after her directly, i don't know if the president wants to start off a second term with a bruising confirmation battle for susan rice. so from her perspective, i think it has hurt her. john kerry, he did a pretty good job helping in the debates. i think he's got a good shot at it. we'll see if anybody else emerges as a candidate. >> republican senator
ask, might be john kerry, the chairman of the foreign committee. susan rice, she certainly was on a very, very short list of possible secretaries of state. but in the aftermath of benghazi and the war, that could be a problem because of what she said on those five sunday television shows and republican anger at her as far as the confirmation process might be concerned. so we'll wait and see on that. i think you're right, timothy geithner, the secretary of the treasury, he made it clear he wants to move on. who might replace him. speculation that jack lieu, the white house chief of staff who twice served as the budget director, omb director and obama administration earlier in the clinton administration, he could be a candidate. there are others as well. i suspect eric holder, the attorney general, might move on and we'll see what happens on that front. but a lot of the other cabinet secretaries, i think are going to stay. i think they would like to stay and they probably will. so it's maybe not going to be as huge a shake-up as there often. >> i want to play for you somethin

to be secretary of state. and susan rice, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations. i have no doubt she would like to be secretary of state. what do you think? >> i think both of those, wolf, would be absolutely spectacular. i think john kerry did a fabulous job this election and in terms of really focusing on what the president's agenda has been and will continue to be. i think susan rice is also a very valuable member of the president's cabinet. i would love to see her be secretary of state, as i think a lot of americans out there would. so i think that he's got some terrific people to choose from. but i also would posit this. maybe not for secretary of state but in terms of as you see all these cabinet positions being reshuffled, i might get some hate mail from my democratic friends about this, but maybe he should think about appointing another republican. and so that way -- >> anyone in mind? >> i don't. >> he did, you know -- >> but that would be something that goes to this bringing people together. >> you did have -- we'll bring alex and david into this. he did have -- ray lahood is his
